The Effect of Osmotic and Ion-osmotic Stresses on the Mortality of Rainbow Trout (salmo Gairdneri)

چکیده
I. The possibility that costs of Ionic and osmotic regulation are different in fish was assessed using mortality rates of rainbow trout exposed to an ionically active substance, sodium chloride and a non-electrolyte. mannitol, in the ambient water. 2. A 24.hr LC,, of 175 mOsm was calculated from data for fish exposed to sodium chloride concns of 400.450. 500. 550. 600,650 and 700 mOsm. 3. Similarly, a 24-hr LCs, of 767 mOsm was calculated from data for fish exposed to mannitol concns of 400. 500. 600 and 700 mOsm. 4. The relatively higher LC,, for fish exposed to increased ion and osmotic concns suggest the costs of ionic regulation may be significantly greater than those associated with osmotic regulation.

The effect of osmotic and ion-osmotic stresses on the blood and urine composition and urine flow of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri).
Changes in urine and plasma concentrations (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and total osmotic) and urine production were determined in fish exposed to various concentrations of an ionically active substance, sodium chloride, and a non-electrolyte, mannitol, as well as freshwater. Responses occurred for the most part over a short crisis period preceding establishment of new stable conditio...

The influence of calcium on the physiological responses of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, to low environmental pH.
The physiological responses of 1- to 2-year-old rainbow trout to low pH are dependent on the environmental calcium concentration. Trout, maintained for 5 days in moderately hard water ([Ca2+] = 1.6-2.7 m-equiv/l) at a mean pH of 4.3, developed a major blood acidosis but exhibited only a minor depression in plasma ion levels. In acidified soft water ([Ca2+] = 0.3 m-equiv/l), only a minor acidosi...
